We also always recommend pre-drilling the screw holes. This prevents the wood from splitting and the screws easily turn into the wood. Use a 2 mm hardwood drill for this.

Installing a post cap is quite simple. 

Step 1: Put the pole cap on your pole.
Step 2: Mark the mounting holes with a pencil.
Step 3: Use a 2mm hardwood drill bit to pre-drill the holes. 
Step 4: Put the pole cap back on the pole and screw it down.
